AfCFTA Secretary-General Engages on Strengthening Trade Corridors in West and Central Africa

Accra, Ghana, 12 March 2026 – H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), met with Dr. Hortense ME, Executive Secretary of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Organization, to address trade corridor challenges in West and Central Africa.

Discussions focused on improving customs and border coordination, reducing clearance delays, enhancing trade-related infrastructure, and leveraging digital systems to facilitate the movement of goods across borders.

Participants underscored the importance of multi-agency collaboration, strong political support, and strategic partnerships in addressing bottlenecks along key trade corridors.

The engagement also highlighted the need for effective resource mobilisation and sustained leadership to transform Africa’s trade corridors, with a view to improving efficiency, enhancing competitiveness, and advancing regional integration under the AfCFTA.
