AfCFTA Secretary-General Urges South African Private Sector to Capitalise on Continental Trade Opportunities

Johannesburg, South Africa, 28 February 2025 – Speaking at the South Africa Private Sector Roundtable Breakfast session, H.E. Wamkele Mene emphasised the need to establish a more diversified market through the AfCFTA Agreement, particularly within the current geopolitical landscape.

The harmonisation of trade rules, elimination of non-tariff barriers, and tariff reductions under the AfCFTA are making South African products more competitive across the continent. This improved trade framework lowers the cost of doing business, enhances efficiency, and fosters innovation in local industries, strengthening South African businesses’ ability to compete in African markets.

Sustained engagement between the AfCFTA Secretariat and the South African private sector continues to pave the way for increased trade, investment, and economic integration. This positions South African enterprises to thrive within a dynamic and expansive African market.

H.E. Mene encouraged entrepreneurs and businesses to think beyond national limitations and explore the vast opportunities presented by the AfCFTA, reaffirming the Agreement’s role in shaping a more integrated and resilient African economy.
