SOUTHERN AFRICAN CUSTOMS UNION (SACU) SECRETARIAT HOLD AN INFORMATION SHARING WORKSHOP ON THE AfCFTA AND EMERGING MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

The SACU Secretariat in collaboration with the AfCFTA Secretariat and the UNDP (through its Regional Bureau for Africa) held a regional dialogue on emerging market opportunities from 1-2 June 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The objectives of the workshop was to delve into the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the business opportunities it presents.

The workshop was important as a platform for business-to-business networking, enhancing interactions between SACU businesses and counterparts from different regions of the continent. Key elements of the AfCFTA were presented in a keynote address by Ms Deneswaree Mohun of the AfCFTA Secretariat Trade in Goods Division on behalf of H.E. Wamkele Mene. The ensuing discussions highlighted key trade and investment opportunities on the continent, and showcased the available financing facilities and instruments available to support the implementation of the Agreement. As a result, there was an enhanced awareness of AfCFTA opportunities as well as an improved understanding of AfCFTA provisions and administrative procedures for exports. A key emphasis was placed on value chains, priority sectors for exports & the Guided Trade Initiative and compliance.

Participants included traders, MSMEs, government officials from SACU member states, chambers of commerce and industry, customs administrations, export/trade promotion agencies, investors, research institutions, civil society organizations, and academia. With a focus on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), including women and youth entrepreneurs, the workshop aimed to ensure their effective integration into the AfCFTA market.
