Baku, Azerbaijan, 13th November 2024 – H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, engaged in an in-conversation session hosted by ODI at COP29, focusing on sustainable net-zero transition and advocating for private sector leadership in Africa’s green transformation. Speaking on The Role of Private Sector in Driving Green Jobs and Shared Prosperity, H.E. Mene highlighted the critical role of private sector investment in creating green jobs, supporting shared prosperity, and building climate resilience, especially for Africa’s most vulnerable communities.
Africa’s renewable energy resources and critical minerals offer a unique advantage in global decarbonisation. H.E. Mene emphasised that the AfCFTA is fostering a supportive environment for green industries by harmonising regulations and reducing trade barriers to enable sustainable business growth across the continent.
While only 14% of Africa’s climate finance currently comes from private investment, H.E. Mene encouraged increased private sector involvement in sectors like renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture. He called on businesses to lead in green job creation, ensuring young Africans gain the skills needed for a sustainable future.
In closing, the Secretary-General reaffirmed AfCFTA’s commitment to supporting Africa’s green economy transition, urging collaborative action to realise the continent’s full potential in climate resilience and sustainable growth. This session highlighted Africa’s readiness to drive inclusive, climate-resilient economic transformation.
