AfCFTA Secretary-General Supports Unified African Position Ahead of WTO Ministerial Conference

Maputo, Mozambique, 26 February 2026 – H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), participated in the African Group Ministerial Meeting on World Trade Organization (WTO) matters, convened by Mozambique in its capacity as Coordinator of the African Group in Geneva.

The meeting forged a unified and strategic continental approach in preparation for the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) to be held in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Ministers of Trade adopted a common African position in the form of a declaration and provided clear political guidance to African negotiators on key issues to be considered at MC14.

The objective of the Ministerial Meeting was to secure concrete outcomes that advance Africa’s economic and development priorities and strengthen the continent’s role in safeguarding the multilateral trading system.

The meeting also underscored the close and mutually reinforcing relationship between the multilateral trading system and the AfCFTA, with interventions highlighting the importance of aligning continental and global trade agendas to deliver meaningful development outcomes for Africa.he AfCFTA in supporting Africa’s collective positioning in the multilateral trading system.
