Expert-led Masterclasses Set the Stage for AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum 2025 in Lusaka

Lusaka, Zambia, 7 May 2025- In preparation for the AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum 2025, the AfCFTA Secretariat concluded a dynamic two-day series of Masterclasses at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka. Held on 6–7 May, these sessions brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, youth innovators, and technical experts to engage deeply with the operational dimensions of the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade.

The Masterclasses were convened by the AfCFTA Secretariat in collaboration with a wide range of strategic partners and focused on translating policy into action through practical learning and dialogue. Topics covered included:

  • “Unpacking the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade” – AfCFTA Secretariat


This session provided participants with a clear understanding of the Protocol’s structure, obligations, and relevance to State Parties and the private sector.   

  • “Digital Marketing for Global Reach” – AfriLabs


A practical session aimed at equipping entrepreneurs and SMEs with digital tools and strategies to access new markets and expand their online presence.

  • “Get Started with E-Commerce” – Google Hustle Academy


Focused on foundational skills in setting up and managing online businesses, tailored for start-ups and early-stage entrepreneurs. 

  • “Exploring New Business Models in Digital Music and Film, and Promoting Financial Inclusion to Empower Tourism and the Creative Industry” – CHATT Africa, Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (Zambia), Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank, Open Window University, and AfCFTA Secretariat

This multi-partner session examined how digital innovation and access to finance can transform creative and tourism sectors under the AfCFTA framework.

  • “Activating Responsible Digital Payments for MSMEs” – Better Than Cash Alliance

Highlighted the importance of inclusive, secure digital payment systems as a foundation for scalable e-commerce and trade participation for small businesses.

  • “Implementing the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol: Assessing the Economics and Identifying Implementation Steps” – ODI Global


A technical discussion on the economic implications of the Protocol and pathways for effective national-level implementation.

  • “Enabling SME Participation in Digital Trade” – International Trade Centre (ITC) and UNDP.

This session focused on addressing barriers and leveraging opportunities to integrate African SMEs into regional digital value chains.

  • “Empowering Youth and Women for Inclusive Digital Trade: A Practical and Policy-Driven Approach” – AeTrade Group

A closing Masterclass that emphasised inclusive strategies for leveraging digital trade to unlock economic opportunities for youth and women entrepreneurs. 

These Masterclasses served as an essential prelude to the AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum, fostering a shared understanding of the digital trade ecosystem and the policy tools available under the AfCFTA. They demonstrated the Secretariat’s commitment to capacity-building, collaboration, and inclusive growth.

The Digital Trade Forum officially opens on 8 May 2025 under the theme “Boosting Digital Trade to Accelerate AfCFTA Implementation.”
