São Paulo, Brazil, 14 October 2024– The AfCFTA Secretariat is taking part in the 12th edition of the Brazil-Africa Forum, being held in São Paulo, Brazil, from 14 to 15 October 2024. This year’s forum, co-organised by the Brazil-Africa Institute and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focuses on “Infrastructure Investment to Boost Sustainable Development in Brazil and Africa.”
During the panel discussion on the role of agro-industry in addressing production and logistics challenges in the Brazil-Africa food supply chain, the AfCFTA Secretariat highlighted key insights on Africa’s agricultural potential. Despite agricultural production on the continent tripling since 1990, and outpacing population growth, 20% of Africa’s food demand is still met by imports. The continent spends approximately 50 billion dollars annually on food imports, while more than 60% of the world’s arable land is in Africa. Additionally, nearly 16% of agricultural production is lost post-harvest.
The AfCFTA is poised to play a transformative role in improving food security on the continent by promoting the free movement of essential agricultural inputs, including fertilisers, seeds, agro-chemicals, and equipment, while harmonising trade regimes across State Parties. The agreement is expected to drive increased production, bolstered by expanded market access, which creates incentives for further agricultural growth.
The opening session of the forum was inaugurated by Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, setting the tone for critical discussions on enhancing Brazil-Africa cooperation in infrastructure and sustainable development.
