The AfCFTA Secretariat to hold a welcome ceremony in honour of H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

Today, the AfCFTA Secretariat is honoured to be hosting H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma whose contributions to Africa are worthy of celebration. Her lifelong commitment to democracy, empowerment, and uplifting the African continent stand as a testament to her vision and dedication.

Agenda 2063, the strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next five decades, is an ambitious vision that envisions an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena. One of its most powerful components, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), is creating a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business persons and investments.

Dr. Dlamini Zuma’s role in setting this agenda cannot be overstated. As the first woman to lead the African Union Commission, her influence was crucial in promoting gender equality and ensuring that women’s voices were heard in the crafting of this ambitious plan. She brought a remarkable perspective to the table, ensuring that the agenda remained inclusive and representative of the diverse population of the African continent.

Throughout her career, Dr. Dlamini Zuma has proven to be a trailblazer. From her involvement in the ANC’s underground activities to her active participation in the South African Students Organization, her courage has been evident. In every role she assumed, whether it was in Health, Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, or as the Minister in the Presidency, she consistently pushed for reform and progress. Her leadership in securing peace in volatile regions like Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo shows her unwavering commitment to stability and peace on the continent. Her work on the African Union itself has been transformational, leading to a more united and powerful Africa.

Under her watch as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the vision for Agenda 2063 took shape. Her firm belief in collective development, human rights, and stability has helped formulate policies that are citizen-centric and aim for an integrated and prosperous Africa.

Dr. Dlamini Zuma’s commitment to upliftment and empowerment of women is particularly noteworthy in the context of Agenda 2063. She has always championed the idea that the future of Africa lies in the hands of its women and youth. The essence of this belief is embedded in the core of the Agenda 2063.

It is this extraordinary commitment and vision that makes Dr. Dlamini Zuma a leading light in Africa’s journey towards Agenda 2063. Her legacy continues to inspire us all as we work towards realising the dream of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa.

As the Secretariat welcomes this incredible woman pioneer, we invite the public to join us in celebrating her legacy.
