Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 6 August 2026 – Ethiopia has concluded the Validation Meeting on the Assessment of its Implementation of the AfCFTA Protocol on Trade in Goods, held in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, from 4–6 August 2026. The meeting marked the final milestone in Ethiopia’s implementation review under the AfCFTA Implementation Review Mechanism (AFIRM).

The assessment drew on documentary analysis, stakeholder consultations and field data collected using the AfCFTA Secretariat’s standardised Implementation Review Matrix (IRM). During the technical sessions, participants examined the evidence, validated implementation scores, identified good practices and implementation gaps, and refined recommendations to strengthen the country’s implementation of the Protocol.

The meeting brought together senior government officials, private sector representatives, development partners, technical experts and the AfCFTA Secretariat to validate the draft assessment report and its accompanying Implementation Review Matrix.

Once finalised, the assessment will inform policy and regulatory reforms, strengthen institutional coordination, enhance customs and trade facilitation measures, and support the accelerated implementation of Ethiopia’s commitments under the AfCFTA.

The resulting reforms are expected to reduce trade costs, improve transparency and expand market access for Ethiopian businesses, while creating a more predictable and enabling trading environment. The participation of the private sector helped to ensure that the recommendations reflect operational realities and address barriers faced by producers, manufacturers, exporters and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The meeting underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to the effective implementation of the AfCFTA, deeper intra-African trade, industrial development, private sector growth and regional economic integration.
